This paper aims to analyse the challenges posed by the Mediterranean refugee and migrant crisis in the European Union, from its inception until the present time. The paper is structured as follows: description of the chain of events leading to the refugee and migrant crisis in the EU, identification of the core challenges posed by this crisis, evaluation of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic to the migratory pressures faced by the European Union and appraisal of the responses laid out by the European Union, namely as the New Pact on Migration, to solve the Mediterranean refugee and migrant crisis.
